Every zone in this archive is scored on four axes — surface area, pain tier, visibility, and design fit — using a methodology co-developed with 180+ working tattoo artists and audited quarterly against confirmed-booking data from our 41 partner studios across the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
Pain tiers are descriptive, not medical. We defer to licensed professionals on healing, removal, and dermatological safety — and we do not present any imagery as medical evidence. Tier scores reflect reader-reported intensity aggregated across 12 months and cross-checked with artist-confirmed session reports.
Visibility ratings — visible, adjustable, private — are editorial shorthand for how often a placement shows in everyday clothing and professional contexts, and are independent of any individual workplace dress code.
Trend data is drawn from a verified network of 41 partner studios feeding monthly booking numbers, and from our own 142,000-subscriber newsletter engagement. Where a "rising" placement is shown, the figure cites a verified quarter, not a forecast.
